Tending your garden as a manager

Gardeners know that plants need rich soil and tending to produce flowers and fruit. Many plants support one another – dill and basil are natural protectors for tomatoes, beans supply nitrogen to corn, while the corn provides a ladder for the beans to climb.

For those working for justice, there is a tension about the traditional view of the relationship between management and workers. Rather than viewing management as a machine, we can view it as an ecosystem in which we build stronger relationships. Inclusion develops when managers engage with their teams to create a shared mission and a healthy organizational culture, bringing out the best in each other and appreciating what everyone brings to their work.

When we build teams that support one another, we are investing in the long-term sustainability of our organizations. When we truly value the contributions of everyone, and hold ourselves accountable to our mission, we create an organizational ecosystem in which people can grow and thrive.
